The Unifying Effect of Law

Judges Gavel, Legal Code And Scales Of Justice CloseupI heard Trey Gowdy give a speech recently in which he mentioned that one of the most unifying principles in a culture is … law. The law of the land requires that the rich and poor all come together in unity to behave in the same way. And it requires people from all races to behave in the same way. A culture that abides by and enforces its laws consistently with all citizens from top to bottom will be a unified culture.

But when law breaks down, disorder breaks out, and disunity runs wild. When the top leaders of a nation no longer regard the law as binding, then the rest of culture follows suit. This is a huge divider in a culture.

So, as we move forward as a country, one of the most unifying things we can do is to reestablish the principle that we are a nation of laws. Lawlessness leads to discord. Lawfulness leads to peace.

  1. I appreciate your persuasion toward unity, Chris. I want to further the discussion by adding a quote from Chuck Colson, better and formerly known as Nixon’s “hatchet man” in an earlier era. “What holds our society together is not force or even laws but moral suasion. Presidents rule not by fiat, but by the sufferance of free men. Without the collective goodwill of 200 million Americans, glibly called ‘public confidence,’ governing is impotent, anarchy – or worse – inescapable.”

  2. Well said. It is the fundamental tenet that all people are equal which must be rigorously adhered to in upholding those laws. In a true egalitarian society justice is dispensed the same for all classes, but we know this is not the case most of the time. The affluent skate while the poor are oppressed and denied the same justice. God has a lot to say about this as He set down laws to govern His chosen nation of Israel. They first became a nation at Sinai and God soon delivered over 600 laws (the Torah) to regulate them. Blessings.

  3. Well said!
It was because Satan did not like God’s law, that he got kicked out of heaven.
There can be no harmony between lawabiders, and lawbreakers.

Which is why Jesus said regarding the law:
For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Matthew 5:18

Let’s resolve to have the unity that Christ desires, by keeping his laws, including the 7th day Sabbath from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday.
